For my capstone project, I have been allowed to work together with the Centre Region Council of Governments (COG) on their ‘Food Scraps Drop-off Pilot Program’ which ran for five months. Many citizens within the community have a desire for aorganics collection program. This pilot aimed to address the issue by offering participants five locations to drop off their household food scraps.
Diverting this organic waste from the landfill to the State College Compost Facility is also in alignment with the Centre Region Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) emission goals. My job was to design a survey that could be used to assess the effectiveness of the pilot. These survey results helped to uncover weaknesses in the model and evaluate problems that could hinder the long-term success of the COG drop-off program.
